Our Last thoughts to John “Totalbiscuit” Bain – By FIR35TORM
By now the words have already spread through the gaming news but in case you haven’t seen it, on Thursday 24th May 2018, YouTube and gaming critic, John “Totalbiscuit” Bain, aged 33 has died, losing his fight with cancer.
Totalbiscuit was well known for his role in professional casting in Starcraft 2, creator of ‘The Co-optional Podcast” and a renowned games critic who have voiced strong support for consumer protection in the gaming industry.
John Bain was diagnosed with bowel cancer in May 2014 and performed chemotherapy treatments to bring it into a complete remission. However, he revealed last month that his liver was failing, and cancer had spread to other regions to his body. This was also when he announced that he was retiring from reviewing games, “I’m currently coming to terms with the fact that I don’t have long left,” he added in his Reddit announcement.
His wife, Genna Bain, announced his death via Twitter, along with a tribute writing “Rest in Peace my Dearest Love.”
During his career, he had gained popularity primarily from his YouTube channel from producing voice-over videos of the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm beta and his “WTF is… ?” series, consisting of first impressions on various titles, both AAA and indie games.
Totalbiscuit was also a strong voice in the gaming industry, calling out many anti-consumer practices including Bethesda’s review policy, Pay-to-Win micro-transactions and the partnership of Gearbox Publishing and G2A, mainly focusing on G2A’s shield service.
We’ve asked the Flaktest community for their last thoughts to John Bain, and here are their final words:
From Zeriah via Flaktest Discord
“I think as a community it’s important to come together to remember how far others have pushed the envelope for esports so that we can exist and do what we love. John was a huge name in the Starcraft scene and a major contributor to the esports scene as a whole.
I encourage anyone who hasn’t heard of him to check out his work in esports, and let’s remember him as someone who worked hard to allow us, in part, to be here today.”
From Pete Curuilli
“So saddened by this loss to the esports and gaming community, TotalBiscuit personified the passion we all share and love this industry for”
From Memer via Flaktest Discord
“An absolute hero in the esports scene my heart is with his family through this difficult time”
And finally, from the editor himself (Harry Cox)
“Totalbiscuit himself defines games criticism with integrity and without bias.
He’s the man who solely introduced me to Persona 5, an amazing JRPG that I’m still sinking my hours into.
The games industry has lost a great figure, but he will certainly won’t be forgotten.”
On behalf of the rest of the Flaktest community and team, we send our condolences to John Bain and his family, the gaming industry has certainly lost a strong voice.
